Allura Partners has placed Peter Mitchley-Hughes as Chief Information Officer at Total Tools and Hardware Group (TTHG) for Metcash, where he will lead technology strategy across the company’s extensive hardware retail portfolio. The appointment represents a significant milestone in Metcash’s ongoing digital transformation and growth strategy.
The newly created CIO role follows the June 2025 merger of Metcash’s Independent Hardware Group (IHG) and Total Tools to form the Total Tools and Hardware Group .
Having completed the merger, the business recognised the need for unified technology leadership to drive consistency, innovation, and competitive advantage across its diverse network that now includes Mitre 10, Home Hardware, Thrifty-Link Hardware, True Value Hardware, Total Tools and Hardings.
Metcash engaged Allura Partners to conduct this important executive search process, led by Niall Ross, Director, alongside Jake Rose, Associate Director and Angela Borbe, Engagement Manager, working closely with Metcash’s Group CIO, Neil Whiteing and the CEO of TTHG, Scott Marshall.
Given the strategic importance of the appointment, the brief required a candidate who could bridge technology leadership with tangible business outcomes. Beyond technical expertise, the successful candidate needed to demonstrate the ability to work across multiple brands, engage with independent operators and drive enterprise-scale transformation while maintaining the agility required for diverse retail networks.
Allura Partners approached senior technology executives across Melbourne with relevant experience in retail, omnichannel transformation and enterprise technology leadership. The team also managed a consistent evaluation process for candidates directly referred to Metcash, ensuring all potential appointees were assessed against rigorous criteria.
Peter Mitchley-Hughes emerged as the outstanding candidate through his unique combination of technology leadership and general management experience across some of Australia’s most respected retail brands: MYER, Country Road, and Bunnings.
Throughout his career spanning more than 20 years, Peter has used technology as a lever for commercial value creation.
He has demonstrated expertise spanning enterprise architecture, omnichannel transformation, cloud platforms, ERP and supply chain modernisation, and board-level governance. He has successfully navigated transformations during crisis periods, post-acquisition integrations, and high-growth phases across multi-billion-dollar enterprises.
But what truly distinguished Peter was his ability to lead cross-functional teams and partner with boards and CEOs as a strategic adviser, ensuring technology strategies are directly tied to measurable business outcomes. His gravitas as a respected leader, combined with his ability to translate complex technology initiatives into clear business value, made him ideally suited for this groundbreaking role at Metcash.
Peter’s appointment will enable Metcash to accelerate its hardware division strategy at a critical time. As the independent hardware sector faces increasing competition and evolving customer expectations, technology will be crucial in maintaining competitive advantage and supporting network growth.
His leadership will focus on leveraging technology as a strategic differentiator – providing Metcash’s independent hardware partners with enterprise-scale digital tools, supply chain optimisation, and enhanced customer engagement platforms while preserving the agility and local responsiveness that defines the independent retail model.
We’re pleased to have supported this landmark appointment and look forward to seeing Peter’s impact as Metcash continues to evolve its hardware division for sustained market leadership.
